Healthcare has been at the epicenter of everything we do for two years. While the pandemic has been a significant driver of the conversation, healthcare technology—artificial intelligence (AI) specifically—has been experiencing explosive growth. One only needs to look at the funding landscape: more than 40 startups have raised at least $20 million in funding specifically to build AI solutions for healthcare applications.

But what’s driving this growth? The venture capital trail alone won’t help us understand the trends contributing to AI adoption in healthcare. But the “2022 AI in Healthcare Survey” will. For the second year, Gradient Flow and John Snow Labs asked 300 global respondents what they’re experiencing in their AI programs—from the individuals using them to the challenges and the criteria used to build solutions and validate models. These are the top five trends that emerged from the research.

After a decade of stop-and-go development, Artificial Intelligence has now begun to provide real, tangible value to the business world. McKinsey published an 80-page report titled "Artificial Intelligence: The Next Digital Frontier?" which provides a comprehensive analysis of the value that Artificial Intelligence (AI) creates for businesses.

The report points out that "wide application of Artificial Intelligence technology will bring great returns to businesses." This means that the disruptive nature of AI will continue to become more apparent in the future. Governments, enterprises, and developers should all be clear on this point. Moreover, the report raises some interesting points (all of which we will discuss later in this article):

From ride shares to smart power grids and from healthcare to our online lives, AI is being propelled out of labs and into our daily lives. Microsoft is betting that conservation-focused AI can save our planet, while Facebook sees it as a silver bullet for rooting out harmful content. Tesla CEO Elon Musk and the late physicist Stephen Hawking both warned society of the potential for weaponized AI.

At CA, we wanted to gain insight into how the AI Ecosystem has developed over the past year. We partnered with Quid, a San Francisco-based startup, whose platform can read millions of news articles, blog posts, company profiles, and patents — and offer immediate insight by organizing that content visually. From its global dataset of 1.8 million companies, Quid classified companies that mentioned a specific focus in "Artificial Intelligence" or "Deep Learning."
