SQLite is an often overlooked flavor of SQL engines. Some have suggested it is the most prolific SQL engine in existence due to its highly flexible nature and ability to run on almost any platform with limited resources. Unlike other SQL engines like MySQL, PostgreSQL, MSSQL, or Oracle, SQLite runs without a server. SQLite does not rely on a data directory or a constantly running daemon: a database is encapsulated in a single file.

SQLite and iMessage

iMessage is one of the most popular messaging platforms today, largely because it is built into iOS and Mac devices. Since its release, it has evolved significantly. But, at its core, it is simply an instant messaging platform. iMessage uses SQLite in the background to store relational data about messages, conversations, and their participants.

GSSAPI authentication is becoming increasingly popular as CockroachDB starting to make inroads in Fortune 2000 customer bases and financial services segment. That said, ecosystem coverage for GSS needs to improve for parity with other authN methods. Today, we are providing a workaround and a look at the future. By the way, do you realize this is my 15th article on Kerberos and CockroachDB?

Articles Covering CockroachDB and Kerberos

I find the topic of Kerberos very interesting and my colleagues commonly refer to me for help with this complex topic. I am by no means an expert at Kerberos, I am however familiar enough with it to be dangerous. That said, I’ve written multiple articles on the topic which you may find below:

Man on the computer.

Introduction

Relational databases distribute their data across many tables by normalization or according to business entities. This makes maintaining a growing database schema easier. Real-world queries often span across multiple tables, and hence joining these tables is inevitable.

PostgreSQL uses many algorithms to join tables. In this article, we will see how joins work behind the scenes from a planner perspective and understand how to optimize them.

From intrusion detection to threat analysis to endpoint security, the effectiveness of cybersecurity efforts often boils down to how much data can be processed in real-time with the most advanced algorithms and models.

Many factors are obviously involved in stopping cybersecurity threats effectively. However, the databases responsible for processing the billions or trillions of events per day (from millions of endpoints) play a particularly crucial role. High throughput and low latency directly correlate with better insights as well as more threats discovered and mitigated in near real-time. Cybersecurity data-intensive systems are incredibly complex: many span 4+ data centers with database clusters exceeding 1000 nodes and petabytes of heterogeneous data under active management.

PostgreSQL is an open-source, versatile, and most popular database system around the world. However, it does not have any features for high availability.

Enter Patroni.  Patroni is a cluster manager tool used for customizing and automating deployment and maintenance of high availability PostgreSQL clusters. It is written in Python and uses etcd, Consul, and ZooKeeper as a distributed configuration store for maximum accessibility. In addition, Patroni is capable of handling database replication, backup, and restoration configurations.

PGBouncer is a lightweight connection pooler for PostgreSQL. CockroachDB is a cloud-native SQL database for building global, scalable cloud services that survive disasters.

CockroachDB is a PostgreSQL wire compatible database, which means it aims to have tight compatibility with the PG ecosystem. Today, we’re going to wire PGBouncer to work with CockroachDB. This article is meant to scratch the surface of possibilities unblocked by PGBouncer with CockroachDB and not meant to be an in-depth overview. We’re currently researching this topic and will follow up with official docs on the proper architecture and sizing of PGBouncer and CockroachDB.

This is the third article of the series. The first article is about integrating Bing Maps with Angular and Spring Boot with Jpa. The second article is about adding a new shape to the map and storing it in the Spring Boot backend.

This article is about removing properties of a map with a modal panel to confirm and delete it in the database. The project AngularAndSpringWithMaps is used as an example. To remove a property the property has to be clicked on.

I’ve run across a fun little trick to simulate latency in your development environments when testing some SQL queries. Possible use-cases including to validate that backend latency won’t bring down your frontend, or that your UX is still bearable, etc.

The solution is PostgreSQL and Hibernate specific, though it doesn’t have to be. Besides, it uses a stored function to work around the limitations of a VOID function in PostgreSQL, but that can be worked around differently as well, without storing anything auxiliary to the catalog.

Using the Prometheus Operator has become a common choice when it comes to running Prometheus in a Kubernetes cluster. It can manage Prometheus and Alertmanager for us with the help of CRDs in Kubernetes. The kube-prometheus-stack Helm chart (formerly known as prometheus-operator) comes with Grafana, node_exporter, and more out of the box.

In a previous blog post about Prometheus, we took a look at setting up Prometheus and Grafana using manifest files. We also explored a few of the metrics exposed by YugabyteDB. In this post, we will be setting up Prometheus and Grafana using the kube-prometheus-stack chart. And we will configure Prometheus to scrape YugabyteDB pods. At the end, we will take a look at the YugabyteDB Grafana dashboard that can be used to visualize all the collected metrics.
